Microdermabrasion — Exfoliating Your Way to Better Skin

If you want an effective way to reduce the appearance of your fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, and acne scars, Dr. Ip recommends microdermabrasion. This simple procedure is non-invasive and has a twofold benefit for your skin — it exfoliates the surface layer and encourages new collagen production from deeper layers.

What is microdermabrasion?

microdermabrasionWhereas dermabrasion is a procedure that removes the outermost layer of the skin, microdermabrasion is much gentler. Microdermabrasion involves the controlled abrasion of the upper layer of the skin to remove the dead skin layer and stimulate the skin to produce new cells. In addition to removing the top layer, the body responds to microdermabrasion by producing new collagen, the skin’s support protein.

What happens during microdermabrasion?

Dr. Ip uses a hand piece that sprays a stream of micro-crystals onto the patient’s skin, creating a gentle exfoliating action. Dr. Ip uses gentle sweeping motions over the treatment area. The hand piece has a vacuum in it so that the exfoliated dead skin cells are vacuumed away along with the crystals.

Microdermabrasion sessions last from 30 minutes to one hour, with from five to 12 sessions usually recommended to attain the best results. Those sessions are spaced two to three weeks apart to allow the skin to regenerate.

Side effects

Whereas more aggressive dermabrasion and chemical peels create a lengthy recovery period where the patient’s skin crusts over and oozes, microdermabrasion doesn’t require any downtime. The skin simply acquires a renewed glow after your session. Patients can return to work or whatever activity they choose immediately following their session.
